Speaker Call For Adopting Multi-sectoral Approach To Address Nutritional Issues In Pakistan

The Speakers on Thursday called for adopting a multi-sectoral approach to effectively address looming threat of nutritional deficiencies affecting over 48 per cent of children which resulted in thousands of lives’ loss.

They expressed these views at a seminar titled ” The Future of Nutrition in Pakistan” organized by ACF- Action Against Hunger, an International Non-governmental Organization working in more than 50 countries to help children and mother suffering frommalnutrition.

The health experts also underlined the need for joining hands against this menace and taking urgent initiatives .

Speaking on the Occasion, Federal Parliamentary Secretary, Dr Nausheen Hamid said that PakistanTahreek-e-Insaf led government had aimed the objective to overcome malnutrition and stunting growth of children from its very first day in office.

She said Prime Minister Imran Khan had also showed the government‘s resolve for coping the prevailing issue in his maiden address to the masses and asserted to reach every children for slow physical and mental growth.

“The only healthy nation can deliver and take the Pakistan to trajectory of prosperity” she remarked.

The malnutrition was not limited to physique of children only but also required to focus on maternal health, regretting that the existing law on breastfeeding could not be implemented in true letter and spirit in previous regimes.

She also stressed for curtailing the rapid population growth to ensure provision of health-care facilities to each citizen and lauded Supreme Court efforts for the purpose.

Emphasizing on sanitation and clean drinking water, she said, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other International commitments were imperative for socio-economic development of the country.

She pledged to allocate more funds in upcoming budget for health adding “We have to adopted the modules of other developed countries succeeded to root out this phenomena once for all from their countries.

” Deputy Country Director of ACF, Muhammad Aamir said that ACF was providing treatment to malnourished children and women beside working to eradicate the root-causes of malnutrition.

There was a dire need to educate the farmers for qualitative and quantitative production methods so that the people could get all required nutrients from their Primary foods.

“Every one dollar spent ending hunger delivers up to a 16 dollar return to the society,” he added.

Unfortunately, the country was losing around 7.6 billion dollar or three per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product against malnutrition, he added.

Head of European Union‘s aid office in Pakistan, Mr Bernard Jaisper said that European Union was working in collaboration with government and non-government institutions to eradicate hunger and address issue of malnutrition in Pakistan.

He said that EU was ready to extend every possible support to the Government of Pakistan for overcoming this major issue.

Country Director of Action Against Hunger (ACF) Jennifer Ankrom said that ACF was helping malnourished children and women in almost fifty countries and ready to extend its international expertise in Pakistan.

The Action Against Hunger wanted to localize international best practices in Pakistan, she added.

Chief Nutrition Officer ACF Dr Nazeer Ahmed said that they were going to launch more than 50 awareness programme, focusing on engaging the local communities.

Actress, model and singer Ayesha Omar said that food insecurity was one of the most important issues in Pakistan and government, non-government organizations as well as media, corporate sector, research institutions and civil society should collaborate for innovative solutions.

She said she would use her social media platform to create awareness regarding malnutrition as well as under nutrition.
